Vision and Objectives

“Social and gender-based change in the Israeli sporting culture in such a way to ensure the full participation of girls, young women, and women in all sports and at all levels.”
Athena – The Center for Promoting Women’s Sports in Israel
Women’s sports have been historically disadvantaged in Israel and worldwide in terms of numbers, standing, and socially. The number of girls and young women directed to play sports, the number of competitive female athletes, the budgets dedicated over the years to women’s sports - all these require improvement for equality to be achieved.

Sport is a social, ethical, and educational tool, that with the participation of women as equal partners in sports has an all-encompassing influence on individuals, the community, and society as a whole, leading to greater egalitarianism and justice. Increasing awareness of the issue and changing trends are creating a new reality for women’s sports in Israel.

Athena strives to create social and gender-based change in the Israeli sporting culture in such a way to ensure the full participation of girls, young women, and women in all sports and at all levels.
These are the overriding objectives of The Center for Promoting Women’s Sports in Israel:
  • Establishing a quantitative and qualitative foundation for female athletes across Israel, through creating opportunities for each girl, young woman, or woman to engage in sports – at any age, anywhere, and at any competitive level, with an emphasis on a broad spectrum of population groups.
  • Creating women’s leadership in sports – Appropriate representation of women among decision makers and policy leaders in sports, in addition to ensuring appropriate and egalitarian budgets, resource allocations, and management by decision makers. Encouraging and providing opportunities for women to egage in the various sports professions, including training, management, and refereeing, as well as creating space for long-term female employment in sports.
  • Education to change public opinion in Israel society as to the importance of sports as a critical factory in the training and development of each girl and young woman.. Encouraging, assisting, directing, and supporting girls in engaging in sporting activities from a young age, continuing to do so out of the knowledge of sports’ benefits as a driver for success, personal empowerment, life skills, and a more egalitarian society.
